What are the factors that impact the precision of sls rapid prototyping?

It’s understood that sls rapid prototyping can fabricate different prototypes even final end products from powdered material.And as rapid prototype,precision matters much.So what are the factors that impact the precision of sls rapid prototyping?

There are many factors does effect on the prototype precision,for instance,sls equipment error,CAD model slice error,scanning way,powder particles,laser power,scanning speed and interval and layer thickness,etc.Especially the sintering parameter does matter much on the precision and strength,these can all produce big difference on the connection between layers,shrinking or warping even cracking.

Then how do those factors impact the precision of sls rapid prototyping?

1.Laser power:With the laser power raised ,the dimensions tolerance increases toward positive direction,and the tolerance increase on the thickness is bigger than on the width .

2.Scanning speed:When the scanning speed increased,the dimension tolerance decreases toward negative direction,and the strength decreased;

3.Sintering intervals:When the sintering intervals increase ,the dimension tolerance decrease toward the negative direction;

4.Layer thickness:With the increasing of single layer,the strength decrease,and the dimension tolerance decrease toward the negative direction.

Besides,preheating is also an important section during SLS,no preheating or uneven heating will lead to a bad result such as longer sintering time,lower performance or precision of products,or even interrupt the whole sintering process.

To do preheating to the powdered material before sls rapid prototyping processing does good to lower the thermal stress inside the part caused by the heat arised during sintering,thus avoid the deformation or warping,and improve the precision of the products.
